Root Canal Treatment
Removing infected pulp and sealing the canal to keep a tooth that would otherwise be lost.
Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed pulp from inside the tooth, disinfects the canal system and seals it. It is what allows a badly decayed or abscessed tooth to be kept rather than extracted.
Most teeth are treated in one or two appointments under local anaesthesia. Retreatment of a previously treated tooth, removal of a fractured instrument or MTA repair of a perforation takes longer.
A tooth that has had root canal treatment is more brittle and usually needs a crown afterwards to protect it.
